Alstom's Spanish R&D and design teams have developed a system with the aim of zero in service breakdowns across their Pendolino fleet.
The system, developed to in essence to predict faults and potential failures prior to happening. The system assess the remaining useful life of components and sets off alarms if there is any damage to components.
And it seems to be working, with 51 of Virgins 56 Pendolino fleet in operation at any one time. Alstom say the system can deliver up to 20% maintenance savings and maximise fleet availability.
A new laser scanner, developed by Alstom, has the potential to transform rolling stock fleet management by detecting maintenance problems in trains automatically. Rosemary Collins reports.
