The chancellor George Osborne’s plan to rebrand the North is part of his strategy to rebalance the UK economy. The move, by what he likes to call the ’one-nation’ government, is designed to breathe new life into the parts of England whose economies have fallen behind the capital – a powerhouse in its own right. The concept of the Northern Powerhouse is simple: link the cities of Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Hull, York, Newcastle and Sunderland to create a collective voice and combined economic base powerful enough to encourage investment and rival the strength of London.
